Rocket League Who to Go for the Ball Guide

Rocket League Who to Go for the Ball Guide by ThisNameWasntStolen

I notice that many players playing Standard 3v3 (up to about 600 rank on USEast) don’t know faceoff etiquette. It’s very simple and yet I see players who should always go for the ball, go for boost instead. Or players that have no business going for the ball, go for it and really ruin the teams chances. And of course, there is the times when everyone goes for the ball, because why the hell not?

Well, I thought it was fairly obvious in most situations who should/shouldn’t go in for the ball and who can go in for the ball, and who should absolutely never go in.

Faceoff scenario #1

The player on the diagonal should ALWAYS go in for the ball. They will 100% beat either of his two teammates to the ball. If you’re in the lonely diagonal position, you may not back up for boost, you may not hang back and you do not pass Go.

Faceoff scenario #2

In this setup, either the two players on the side can go for the ball. You can work this out via quick chat commands, or over TS or Skype if you’re on a set team. One person should always always always go in for the ball though!

Faceoff scenario #3

Again, in this setup, either the two players in the front can go for the ball. You can work this out via quick chat commands, or over TS or Skype if you’re on a set team. One player should always always always go in for the ball though!

The third player (See every scenario), the one who has no chance at winning the faceoff, should always stay back in the goal in case the opposing team gets a favorable bounce off the wall.

THE “GOALIE”

Its an option for the ‘goalie’ to get boost during the faceoff. However, my personal preference when in this position is to wait to see the results of the play, because i’ve seen many good bounces off the halfboards right to the front of the net for an easy tap-in.

There is plenty of time to get boost after your team wins the ball into the other end. And you don’t run the danger of being out of position to make a save.

Well there we go.

If people like this, I can post more for all kinds of setups/tactics/plays. I by no means think that i’m the greatest player but I would definitely produce more if there was interest. Let me know!

****** Edit So I really didn’t expect this to get so much attention. Let me clarify that I didn’t specify every possible scenario from each faceoff. I didn’t take into account the different fields and boost positions (Utopia), which I might do in a future post, but for now, this was more of a frustration/basic example on what you should and shouldnt do on the faceoff.
