This is a match I played recently. The Tyr hadn’t played for over a year so I am not mad at him, but his build is shall you say, not that great. So how do we fix this?
Here are a couple things that you should know when comes to items.
- Boots are always necessary. Try to build them first to second item on any god. Boots are useful for their cooldown reduction, penetration and extra speed. The kind of boots depends on which role you are playing. If you are playing support, I would recommend Midas Boots until you get out of the laning phase, then replace them with Shoes of Focus. If you are a Warrior, an Assassin or a Hunter, get Warrior Tabi over Ninja Tabi for almost every character except maybe Thanatos if they have mostly squishy gods. If you are a mage I would recommend Shoes of the Magi. These Shoes are needed because if you don’t have much penetration, tanks will be virtually unkillable. Same goes with Warrior tabi.
- Next you usually want some sort of cooldown item for Mages or Warriors. If you don’t build cooldown reduction, your abilities usually take a long time to get off cooldown. Some good cooldown items for mages are things like Breastplate of Valor for the added physical protection or Chronos Pendant for the added magical power, depending on if they have many physical powerhouses. Jotuns is a good cooldown item on warriors because of its great pen, lots of mana and 25% cooldown reduction
- Second item on Hunters are usually stack items such as Devourer’s Gauntlet or Heartseeker*. Hunters do good with stacking items because of their great additions of things like lifesteal and physical power.
*Only get Heartseeker if you are doing very well in your lane and or you are fed
- Second item on a Support is always Sovereignty. It makes you very tanky and everyone else able to take more hits. Sovereignty is a supports main item for its huge amount of protections.
- Third item on Mages is a good lifesteal item. I usually get Bancrofts for its great magical power, lots of lifesteal and really good passive. Polynomicon is a better item for lategame now after its recent nerf to its passive, but still great for gods like freya and chronos.
- Third item on Warriors honestly depends on what kind of warrior you are playing. If you are playing someone like Sun Wukong or Tyr, Shifters Shield is a great item for its possible power and protections. If you are playing someone like Chaac or Osiris, Qin’s Sais is still a great item even after its recent gold increase because of its absolutely great passive that will make any tank cry.
- Third item for a tank is fairly optional. It mostly depends on what is a problem on the enemy team. Have an intensely fed Mercury? Buy something like Hide of the Nemean Lion or Midguardian Mail. Have a Troublesome Ao Kuang (rip in peace noodle) ? Get something like Stone of Gaia or Bulwark of Hope for their magical protection. It all really depends on what is doing lots of damage.
- Third item on a Hunter is always Executioner. It gives lots of Pen, Attack Speed and Power to shred through your opponents.
- Fourth item you want on a Mage is some penetration. Good Items for pen all depends on the situation. If you are someone that relies heavly on Damage Over Time (D.O.T for short), get Spear of the Magus. If you are more nuke centered I would recommend Obsidian Shard for its relative cheapness and large amount of power and pen. If you have a high damaging lane opponent like Ao Kuang or Isis, get Void Stone for its high magical protection.
- Fourth item on a Warrior should be something that gives Attack Speed, like Witchblade or Asi. Witchblade is a good item for its attack speed and its ability to reduce the attack speed of other gods. Asi is good for its lifesteal and attack speed.
- Fourth item for a Tank is fairly optional. I usually get Magi’s Blessing for its crowd control reduction and its ability to absorb crowd control.
- Fourth and Fifth item for Hunters is always Rage and Deathbringer. It gives the solicited “crits”, which is the reason for Hunters nickname of ADC (Attack Damage Carry). I makes your Auto Attacks go from doing 160 damage to doing 400 to 600 damage. Its basically your main item that you always get.
- Fifth item for a mage is always Rod of Tahuti. It gives a metric ass-ton of magical power and increases magical power by 25% of current magical power.
And honestly, the rest is optional. It all depends on the situation. If their magicals hurt bad, get magical protection. If their Physicals hurt bad, get Physical Protection. It all depends on the situation.
Now what are some items that are really not that great and that you should avoid using entirely?
Here are a few:
- Reinforced boots. It may seem really great for tanks, but every other boot is better than it because it gives no damage what-so-ever
- Spirit Robe. This one is tricky. I don’t recommend unless you have a powerful mage that uses their cc to engage like He Bo or Anubis.
- Telkhines Ring. 40 damage in the grand scheme of things is not that much damage. Get demonic grip if you are a heavy basic attacker.
- Ninja Tabi. Pen on the Warrior Tabi is way more important then then cooldown reduction. If you are looking for cooldown reduction on physicals, get the aforementioned Jotuns.
- Hastened Fatalis. Hastened Fatalis is only really good on a select few. If you are constently losing targets, get Sprint 3 because it gives hastened fatalis’ passive plus 30% move speed increase.
- Frostbound Hammer. This item is too expensive for what it does. Get the second tier of it instead.
What about actives? Some actives are fantastic and will save your life constently, while others are useless.
Some really good actives include:
- Purification Beads. It makes you immune to crowd control for 3 seconds on activation. Get if enemy team has an Ares, Hades or anyone else with a large crowd control ability.
- Aegis. Makes you immune to damage for 2 seconds but has a long cooldown. Get if tey have someone like Vulcan, He Bo or any other really high damaging ultimates.
- Blink. An unpredictable teleport. Great for starting teamfights if you are a support. Would recommend Greater blink over Combat blink for its lower cooldown
- Sprint. Increases movement speed by up to 33%. Great for getting out of sticky situations.
- Girdle. Increases teams power by 20% if Girdle of Support is bought. Use for things like FG or GF for quicker taking of the buff.
- Weakening Curse. Its slows them nothing and can counter heals like Herc (fuck herc) and Ra.
- Hand of the Gods. Useful for taking FG, GF and buff camps. Must-buy if you are solo, jungle or support.
- Salvation (ONLY IN ASSAULT). Free mana and health every 60 second. Use when low on mana.
