Minecraft Updating Video Drivers Guide

Minecraft Updating Video Drivers Guide by HappyHitman

Hello, now many people I have seen around the forums are having issues with out of date graphics drivers and low fps. This thread should hopefully help. Many of you will know what to do when updating your video drivers and will find this thread useless, other people however will find this thread helpful. If you don’t know how to update your graphics drivers and are getting errors then this is normally the first step to fix those errors.

Now I’m not saying that this will fix all your problems or even some of your problems, it just means that your drivers are up to date and we can assist you further.

Finding out which operating system your are running (32/64Bit?).

WindowsIf you are using Windows 7/Vista, click Start -> Control Panel -> System and Maintenance -> System. The System type: line will give you the Operating System type:

If you are using Windows XP, click Start -> Run and type dxdiag. If a Windows dialog box is displayed asking if you want to verify your drivers, you can safely click No and continue. Then you should see this picture:

The Operating System line, refers to Windows x64 or 64-bit edition.

Mac
Select About this Mac from the Apple menu. The text below Mac OS X will give the operating system version:

Mac OS X 10.5 (or greater) is a 64-bit operating system.

Linux
Linux users should type the uname command. Depending on the platform, you may see:

[cph@gaylord ~]$ uname -a

Finding out which graphics/video card you have.

Windows

This short video I made should help you understand how to find out what graphics/video card you have:
aL-Xj6sAvSw

This is how you find out what video drivers you have for Windows 7/Vista.
For Windows XP, use a run box instead of the text box at the bottom of the start menu.

Mac

I could not make a video for mac, however I have some written instructions.

1. Click on the apple icon located at the top left of an application window.
2.Click on “About This Mac”. The information about your operating system, processor, memory, and startup disk appears.
3.Click on the “More info…” button near the bottom of the window.
4.Click on “Graphics/Displays” in the column of information under “Hardware”. Your video card information appears in the right panel. For example, my type of video card is an Intel GMA 950 which appears at the top with additional information about the video card following.

Then this box should appear (If the box is different it should contain the same information):

Linux

Now if you are using Linux then you should already know how to find out what video card you have, but this is what you do just incase:

Typing this command will usually tell you the vendor and model of your card. Open xterminal or shell prompt and type the command:

$ lspci
$ lspci -v
$ lspci -v | less

A couple of lines down the output text:

Quote
00:03.0 USB Controller: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] USB (rev 01)
00:03.1 USB Controller: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] USB (rev 01)
00:03.2 USB Controller: Broadcom BCM5785 [HT1000] USB (rev 01)
00:05.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc Rage XL (rev 27)
00:18.0 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] HyperTransport Technology Configuration

00:18.2 Host bridge: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] K8 [Athlon64/Opteron] DRAM Controller

Look for video controller / vga keywords in above output listing.

If I missed anything send me a PM or reply to this thread with a quote.
