Monster Hunter World Hunting Horns Guide

Monster Hunter World Hunting Horns Guide by Chia_Pete_FTW

I was making this list mostly for myself, but a friend told me I should share it.

I have almost exclusively used the Hunting Horn in MHW, if you want to pick it up, or you just want to know which horn is best against which monsters, then have I got the list for you!

Alphabetically, these are, IMHO, the most optimal/best horns you can use against each monster. *I only listed the songs that are effective against the monster. For example, if the horn can grant S Earplugs, but the monster has a Large roar I did not include it the reasoning.

Anjanath Water Tamtam III: *** Attack up L, S Earplugs, and Water damage. Good for when you are more accustomed to his attack style and want to end things quickly.

Datura Horn III: *** L Earplugs, Health recovery L, Poison. I lovingly call this Horn “Healthcare Plan”. Your allies not flinching every time Anjy roars and healing pinned teammates makes this one of the better Horns against this guy.

Barroth Water Tamtam III: *** S Earplugs, Muck resist, Attack up L, and Water damage. This weapon is almost taylormade to counter this monster, Nuff said.

Heavy Bone Horn II: ** This horn plays all the same notes. It will be more effective, but only if you have Awaken III skilled in.

Bazelgeuse Lightning Drumb III: *** L Earplugs, Health recovery L, Lightning.

Desolation’s Overture: ** L Earplugs, Health Rec S + Affinity Boost, Dragon. Dragon damage is still good and the dmg boost helps end it quickly.

Diablos & Black Diablos Datura Horn III: *** L Earplugs, Health recovery L, Poison. I hope I don’t have to explain why Earplugs are useful against these guys (and gals, in Black Diablos’ case)

Desolation’s Overture: *** L Earplugs, Health Rec S + Affinity Boost, Dragon. Against Normal Diablos ONLY. Dragon is no good for Black Diablos :(

Queen Vespoid Horn: ** Defense L, Stamina Use Reduce L, Paralysis, and Sonic Waves. This one might be the best choice on paper, but only if your squad can forgive you for the lack of Earplugs… also, the Sonic Waves is perfect for Blos, but VERY difficult get off successfully.

Dodogama Water Tamtam III: *** Attack up L, S Earplugs, and Negate Environmental Damage (useful if he wanders into hotter areas, walk on lava like it’s nothing!), Water.

Heavy Bone Horn II: ** This horn plays all the same notes. It will deal slightly more damage, but only if you have Awaken III skilled in.

Great Girros Teostra’s Orphee: *** Status attack up, Divine Blessing, All Ailments Negated, Blast. One of my favorite Horns in the game. No pesky Para with this. I guess this is more of a personal preference, but I don’t care, I love this Horn!

Great Jagras Bazelreid Rookslayer: *** Attack up L, Health Rec S, Recovery Speed L, Blast. Really you can kinda use whatever… But use this one if you want to have fun doing it.

Jyuratodus Water Tamtam III: *** Muck resist, Attack up L, and Water damage. A rare case of a non-dragon’s weapon being the most effective choice to kill it.

Kirin Teostra’s Orphee: *** Status attack up, Divine Blessing, All Ailments Negated, Blast. Sick of Kirin giving your allies Lightning Blight? Sick of Kirin Paralyzing sed allies? Sick of Kirin Stunning sed Blighted & Paralyzed allies? LOOK NO FURTHER! Keep up the Ailment Negation tune keeping your friends safe from Kirin, and their families safe from controllers thrown across the room in frustration! Save a marriage, and farm a Teostra today.

Kulu-Ya-Ku Dancing Duval III & Lumu Barone III: *** Stamina Reduce L, Defense L, Tool Use Drain Reduce L, Stun Negated. Very good Horns, but you’ll need Awaken III to use them to their full potential. Duval, with it’s high affinity, is perfect for a Sleep Bomb build with Zora Armor. Lumu has good affinity, and the highest Hunting Horn elemental damage stat. Not a difficult monster, but the stun resist helps when he digs up rocks at least.

Kushala Daora Xeno Manasheena: *** Defense up L, Attack & Def up S, All Wind Pressure Negated, Stamina Use Reduce L, Dragon. Kush’s Wind shield is completely useless, your friends will love you.

Royal Chordmaker & Queen Vespoid Horn: ** Stamina Use Reduce L, All Wind Pressure Negated, Defense L, Ice Resist L. Xeno can be a hard grind, these two other horns will prove almost just as useful utility wise, and the Ice resist is a nice bonus. The only downside is that Kush isn’t particularly weak to Fire or Para.

Lavasioth Water Tamtam III: *** Attack up L, S Earplugs, and Negate Environmental Damage (your allies can walk on lava all day), and Water damage. This guy can be annoying, when your allies are bouncing their weapons off his hide, they are rolling around, praying for sweet release from the agony that is fire crotch. Tell them to rest easy, for now they have you.

Legiana Royal Chordmaker & Queen Vespoid Horn: *** Stamina Use Reduce L, All Wind Pressure Negated, Defense L, Ice Resist L. Fire/Para. Take your pick, either is perfect :D

Neregigante Desolation’s Overture: *** L Earplugs, Health Rec S with 20% affinity boost, Dragon. Like most other Nergigante’s weapons, this one is top tier and hard to put down.

Thunderbolt Horn II: *** Health Rec S, Recovery Speed S, Divine Protection, Elemental Attack Boost L, Thunder. All that Kirin hunting has paid off! Now help your allies stay alive through a mix of healing, recovery, & elemental damage buffs, with a dash of divine luck!

Odogaron Teostra’s Orphee: *** Status attack up, Divine Blessing, All Ailments Negated, Blast. When you think of this Monster, what comes to mind? Bleeding? Effluvia Buildup halving your health? Being stunned by the relentless onslaught of frenzied attacks by Freddy Krueger’s lost puppy? Well bottle those feelings in a deep dark place like a time capsule for your therapist or future spouse to find in a decade or so. With Teo’s Horn, you don’t need to worry about any of those! Effluvia areas will still DOT, you will just be immune to the status effect.

Paolumu Royal Chordmaker: *** Stamina Use Reduce L, All Wind Pressure Negated, Defense L, Fire. Do you really need anything else? Take the wind out of his sales and kill it with fire.

Queen Vespoid Horn: *** Stamina Use Reduce L, All Wind Pressure Negated, Defense L, Para. Still very effective, just not as focused on YOUR damage.

Pukei-Pukei Legia Sectored & Anja Barone III: *** Stamina Use Reduced L, Defense Up L, Health Recovery M + Antidote, Ice/Fire. Not a very hard monster, but chugging antidotes can get tedious.

Teostra’s Orphee: *** Status attack up, Divine Blessing, All Ailments Negated, Blast. Don’t even worry about getting poisoned in the first place!

Radobaan Dragonbone Auldhorn: *** Tremors Negated, Elemental Attack Boost L, Dragon. Just not having to deal with his tremors is enough reason to use this one, the elemental boost and dragon damage are just icing on the cake.

Teostra’s Orphee: *** Status attack up, Divine Blessing, All Ailments Negated, Blast. Ignore the sleep powder, deal with the tremors. A very potent choice seeing he is weak to blast.

Bazelreid Rookslayer: *** Attack up L, Health Rec S, Recovery Speed L, Blast. Recovery speed up is great, and it’s even better against slower monsters. A great all-purpose horn.

Raths (Red, Blue, Green, Pink) Desolation’s Overture: *** L Earplugs, Health Rec S + Affinity Boost, Dragon. Good for taking down all the Raths.

(for all except Azure) Lightning Drumb III: ** L Earplugs, Health recovery L, Lightning. If you haven’t had the chance to farm Nerg for his body yet, this horn will help keep your team afloat in the meantime.

Teostra Datura Horn III: ** L Earplugs, Health recovery L, Poison. Not many options for Teostra, but this horn is always a solid choice.

Water Tamtam III & Heavy Bone Horn II(Awakened): ** Attack up L, and Negate Environmental Damage (useful if he wanders into hotter areas), Water. I would only recommend these if you are fighting him in the Elder’s Recess. This will negate all the passive lava damage you would be taking otherwise. I will have to test to see if it guards from lava plumes and update y’all later.

Tobi-Kadachi Water Tamtam III: *** Attack up L, S Earplugs, Water. Keep everyone’s damage up, and keep them attacking!

Tziti-Ya-Ku Dancing Duval III & Lumu Barone III: *** Stamina Reduce L, Defense L, Tool Use Drain Reduce L, Stun Negated. Smile for the camera! No more hiding from the flashes like a hung over celebrity.

Teostra’s Orphee: *** Status attack up, Divine Blessing, All Ailments Negated, Blast. Why haven’t you gotten this Horn yet??

Uragaan Water Tamtam III: *** S Earplugs, Attack up L, and Negate Environmental Damage (In case he decides to take a molten lava bath), Water. Most everything you need for this fight.

Dragonbone Auldhorn: *** Tremors Negated, Elemental Attack Boost L, Dragon. Anti-tremor is great! Dragon is 2 ** so this is again a solid choice, like with his greasy cousin.

Vaal Hazak Teostra’s Orphee: *** Status attack up, Divine Blessing, All Ailments Negated, Blast. Are you surprised? Vaal is the reason I fell in love with this weapon. Negating his health cutting effluvia BS is sooo satisfying. This Horn is all the more valuable in the Quest where you have to fight Vaal and Odogo at the same time.

Anja Barone III: *** Stamina Use Reduced L, Defense Up L, Health Recovery M + Antidote, Fire. IF your entire team has effluvia res III, you can pull out this bad boy. Your bow users and Dual Bladers will love you for it.

Xeno’Jiva Dragonbone Auldhorn: *** Tremors Negated, Dragon Resistance L, Elemental Attack Boost L, Dragon. This Horn was made for the big baddies. I hope I don’t need to explain why.

Datura Horn III: ** L Earplugs, Health recovery L, Poison. A solid alternative, seeing how Xeno is weakest to poison.

Zorah Magdaros Dragonbone Auldhorn: *** Tremors Negated, Elemental Attack Boost L, Dragon. Not having to wait for the shakes to pass is extremely satisfying. Just remember that it works when he knocks on the gate too!

That’s it. Thanks for reading :) If you have any suggestions or comments, feel free to share. I will be updating the list if I see the need to make any changes to my reasoning.
