If you want to determine the shape and size of your island, use this excel sheet. Island Finder 
To help you, under the small and medium (large coming later) You will see
X and Y
X = Number of non-Fresh Water nodes
Y = Total number of Fresh Water

NOTE* In progress, statistics are estimations based on observation. So, take them lightly.

Primary Resources: Also known as Fertility in game

Sections: First is always explored. So 4 means 1 discovered, 3 aren’t.
You can have a max of 9 islands (starting + 8) 4 are purchased with gems, 4 are unlocked via merchants
You can explore as much as you want. Limited time to keep the map, though (3 days for small, 4 days for medium).
Takes 99 gems to save a discovered map.
Unique resources are dictated by the type of Sailor.

*Note: Secondary Resources Ignores empty nodes and Fresh Water as those are possible on every discovery (eg not dependent on sailor type) For example, a small island will get a total of 4-6 Nodes of either stone and/or Iron Ore PLUS Empty Desposits and/or Fresh Water

Small Islands

• Primary Resources: 1
• Secondary Resources: 4-6
• Sections: 3-4
• Chance of finding with a Sailor: 100%
• Chance of finding with a capable sailor: High
• Chance of finding with a Experienced sailor: Unknown My guess is Moderate (50% or so)

Medium Islands

• Primary Resources: 1
• Secondary Resources: 5-6
• Sections: 4-7
• Chance of finding with a Sailor: 0%
• Chance of finding with a capable sailor: Low: ~15% – 20% (according to Damien)
• Chance of finding with a Experienced sailor: Unknown My guess is Decent (Greater than 25%)

Large Islands

• Primary Resources: 2
• Secondary Resources: 6-7?
• Sections: 7 total
• Chance of finding with a Sailor: 0%
• Chance of finding with a capable sailor: 0%
• Chance of finding with a Experienced sailor: Unknown %5 according to German servers
