Resource production should be done in other cities, not the military city. The only resource production I would consider for a military city is some small amount of food production, as that will slow down the frequency with which you will have to ship food. A military city exists for one purpose and one purpose only, to build and field large armies. And deviation from that primary focus by generating resources in that city will slow down your army’s build speed and/or reduce it’s ultimate size. Both of those are game ‘loosing’ strategies. You should import ‘all’ necessary resources into your military cities from your resource cities.

To build a military city you will need vast quantities of stone, easily twice the quantity of stone per hour of a normal city. This means you should have at least two very well developed resource cities that can for all intents stop growing while you build your military city. Personally, I would not build a military city until I had at least four well developed resource cities, so that my existing cities can keep growing, and so I can continue to perhaps create yet more cities.

Building a military city is done in stages. The first stage is to build roughly forty cottages and level them up to six or seven. Then level another dozen or so to level eight. That done, you build up your town hall to level ten and lay down the rest of your 100 buildings as in the example below.

Note that in the example above there is no castle. There is no need to expose your castle to conquest at this point. You are just starting your military city, leave the castle for later when it is strong enough to defend itself. With your 40 cottages leveled up as they are, you should have a build speed of over 2000%. Build up your center area troop producers and barracks. (Obviously which troops you build in your city is up to you.) You can start producing troops in your city now, though it will still take several days for your city to really kick into high gear.

Once your troop producers and existing barracks are all at level ten, and not before then, start removing one cottage at a time and replacing it with a barracks. You might find yourself building a castle at some point during this process once your troop construction fills up your barrack’s capacity. Upgrade your castle as necessary to keep up with your troop production. Flesh out the remainder of your city center as below.

Once all buildings in your city center are fully leveled along with your castle and all other relevant buildings, you can start to, one by one, replace your remaining cottages with barracks and such, perhaps winding up with a military city such as below.
