1. Intro
So you’re considering tanking?

This guide should show you all the ropes you need for tanking in luna Plus!
if you’re unsure what tanking is exactly, its a highly defensive character that protects lower defensive characters, Such as DPS, healer, basically standard party positions.

2. Paths and reasoning
There are several paths to go for tanking, you just have to match the one up with what you want out of a tank

Vocationals will be indicated as Image or Image as these are the only vocational important to tanking.

Image = HP Vocational
Image = Physical Defense Vocational

Path 1 – The Shield
Image Image Image Image
ImageImageImageImageImage +15% HP
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% Physical Defense

Guard > Infantryman > Phalanx > Paladin
The pure tank, maximized Pdef and HP vocational, grabbing every single one in the path! This is personally my path and I’m happy with it, one of the things you may look out for is low damage out put, if you’re really worried about soloing, or what to do when there’s no DPS around do NOT go this path.

Pros:
-VERY High Physical Defense
-Mental Vortex (up to 23% Matk) for buffing magical DPS
-High block rate at lvl 75
-INT Based attacks at 75
-Level 20 HAE
-Highest level Doom Burst (46% Reflect)
-Highest HP Multiplier of 105
-5 more HP recovery than The Sharp Shield
-Perfect Tanker Vocationals

Cons:
-VERY low damage out put
-Low Magical defense
-Low MP (you wont use much mp tanking
-Capability of soloing – Minimal.

Path 2 – The Spell Binding Shield
Image Image Image Image
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% HP
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% Physical Defense

Guard > Infantryman > Phalanx > Crusader
This is my idea of the Magical Defense Tank.
The addition of Mana aura to this build its PERFECT for going wisdom, which will give you a lot of mdef and MP which thanks to mana aura can be used as HP!
Another plus to this build is that crusader is a good soloist if geared properly, You can just as easily go INT and be a DPS with tanking characteristics.

Pros: High Physical Defense
Average Mdef (High as tankers are going to get IMO)
-Mental Vortex (up to 43% Matk) for buffing magical DPS/Yourself
-High block rate at lvl 75
-INT Based attacks at 75
-Stronger INT based attacks at level 105
-High HP
-Mana Aura
-Good damage output (INT)

Cons:
-Missing HP Vocational
-Going INT lowers Pdef/Mdef a lot (difference of about 400 Pdef with my -experience)
-Weak to Mana burn if too reliant on Mana Aura.

Path 3 – The Sharp Shield
Image Image Image Image
ImageImageImageImageImage +15% HP
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% Physical Defense

Guard > Infantryman > Knight > Paladin
Personally, I recommend this path for pure Pdef tanking and occasional Soloing, this is IMO the perfect path, it gets all the same vocationals as The Shield, but with some very useful skills from Knight, such as solid weapon.

Pros:
-VERY High Physical Defense
-Mental Vortex (up to 23% Matk) for buffing magical DPS
-Solid Weapon (Up to 15% patk) for buffing physical DPS/yourself.
-High block rate at lvl 105
-STR Based attacks at 75
-Level 20 HAE
-Very high HP
-Highest level Doom Burst (46% Reflect)
-Highest HP Multiplier of 105

Cons:
-Average damage out put
-Low Magical defense
-Low MP

Path 4 – The Holographic Shield (ELVEN EXCLUSIVE PATH)
Image Image Image Image
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% HP
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% Physical Defense

Guard > Infantryman > Phalanx > Magnus
This class makes up for is lack of Physical Defense in use of shield aura, with this buff can most likely rival a common paladins Physical defense, the downside to this is that if the paladin gets a shield Aura his pdef will fly a hundred or so (50-100) more than the magnus.

Protection Aura, Very useful in Castle Siege as damage is reduce to 10% ish, and saving your life on a larger mob, this skill uses a bubble of protection and takes all damage for you for the numbers depicted below for 2 minutes with 2:30 cool down.
if you take more than that damage, the aura dissipates.

Pros:
-High Physical Defense
-High block rate at lvl 75
-INT Based attacks at 75
-Shield aura
-Protection aura Still very strong in CS as 16k+ hp is a lot there
-Highest MP Multiplier of 105 fighters
-Makes up for shortage of Pdef by using Aura’s

Cons:
-Lowest HP Multiplier of 105 Fighters
-Meeting allied magnus will not improve your Pdef any further

Path 5 – The Holographic Sharp Shield (ELVEN EXCLUSIVE PATH)
Image Image Image Image
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% HP
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% Physical Defense

Guard > Infantryman > Knight > Magnus
This class makes up for is lack of Physical Defense in use of shield aura, with this buff can most likely rival a common paladins Physical defense, While doing so, and reaping the offensive capabilities of Knight and magnus becomes a solo-able class with enough damage to be self sufficient. No you wont do as much as a PURE dps but if you gear/stat for it, you can tank.

Pros:
-High Physical Defense
-High Attack power High
-Shield aura
-Protection aura: still very strong in CS as 16k+ hp is a lot there
-Highest MP Multiplier of 105 fighters
-Use of dual possible DPS class with dual as this class has PATK capabilities

Cons:
-Lowest HP Multiplier of 105 Fighters
-Meeting allied magnus will not improve your Pdef any further
-No block rate buffs

Path 6 – The Offensive Shield
Image Image Image Image
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% HP
ImageImageImageImageImage +6% Physical Defense

Guard > Swordsman > Knight > Paladin
Tearing some Metal off your shield and forge it into a weapon, this path passivises defenses as a priority while getting warrior form from swordsman, this choice how ever loses you a big HP AND Pdef vocational.

Pros:
-High Physical Defense
-Mental Vortex (up to 23% Matk) for buffing magical DPS
-Solid Weapon (Up to 15% patk) for buffing physical DPS/yourself
-High block rate at lvl 105
-STR Based attacks at 75
-Level 20 HAE
-High HP
-Highest level Doom Burst (46% Reflect)
-Highest HP Multiplier of 105
-Warrior form
-Okay-ish Patk

Cons:
-Average damage out put
-Low Magical defense
-Low MP
-No Attract circle till level 75
-Loss of a major Pdef vocational
-Loss of major HP vocational
-Even though Patk is put forward
-Paladin will never do a quarter damage of what a sword master could put out.

Path 7 – The Rune Shield (ELVEN EXCLUSIVE PATH)
Image Image Image Image
ImageImageImageImageImage +10% HP
ImageImageImageImageImage +6% Physical Defense

Guard > Infantryman > Rune Knight > Paladin
“Woah a path with RUNE KNIGHT? But they suck now!”
This is a variation of the Offensive Shield, sacrificing a weaker Bloody Sky for a stronger Sword Storm. This Build has all the positives of the offensive shield but makes up for its lack of defense and gets shield aura, as well as TWO Self heals.

Pros:
-High Physical Defense
-Average-high Attack power High
-Shield aura
-Highest HP Multiplier of 105 fighters
-This class has PATK capabilities without Dual
-Warrior form
-2 heals

Cons:
-Loss of Pdef Vocational
-Very sp hungry if hybrid
-Loss of solid weapon

Any extra paths you’d like to add, tell me about them and I’ll add them if I see fit :D

3. Builds and styles

Full Vitality
This stat build will give you a whopping 10k HP and around 300-400 Pdef if you’re smart about it, as well as pretty much immunity to pretty much any stun (they still exist they’re just 0.1 second) this path is good for large mob tanking

Full Wisdom
This stat build I only recommend doing The Spell binding shield, you’ll probably get about 8k MP, Mdef maybe about 400-500

Full Intelligence
NOT TANKING STAT BUILD
This build is for The Shield or The Spell binding shield, gives use of their INT based attacks, and allows them to solo.

Full Dexterity
NOT TANKING STAT BUILD?
Now I really recommend against this, I know the whole evasion deal is all fancy and yada yada yada.
Evasion is so easy to get in Accessories there’s no reason to waste status points on it.

Full Strength
NOT TANKING STAT BUILD
This path is for the Sharp shield or Offensive Shield, utilizes their Physical Attack power.

4. Training: 1-40
Image

Welcome to the world of being a tank!
What you’ll need to do before level 40 is get a custom to mobbing, as soon as you can get the two AoE’s, Deep spin and invisible Rope, two routes I’d recommend at low level, Going Strength or going INT. (be aware going int may be hard at low levels due to the fact you will not get skills that benefit from int until level 75 at phalanx)
Parties are VERY VERY VERY hard to find at such a low level, you’ll have to be self sufficient unless you’re linked to a constant partner, then by all means, vit it up.

Hot Spots.
1-40 DD Leeching (No monsters are even close to good to this, find a friend or pay someone to be your friend turn the EXP to 100% – 0% towards you, and make you level 50x+ faster)

To Ensure Maximum EXP for every mob
1-25 = 21-40 DD
26-40 = 41-60 DD
40+ = 61-80

5. Training: 41-70
Image

Guess what, Monsters got a power boost now that you’re most likely infantryman.
First of all now you’ve got 4 AoE’s, I’d forget all about invisible rope now as its USELESS with the 3 other aoe’s you can keep a good rhythm going without using that horribly weak AoE. I’d make some level 45 armor and enchant the hell out of (+8 is good enough NOT NOT NOT +12) it while you can still use the How to enchant scrolls, 50x less gold than the real ones, you’ll start taking some damage if you’re strength now, Get a pet somehow and teach it healing basics or if you CAN get your hands on it, Pet great heal, pretty much makes you unkillable and you wont need octopus buff! (but kinda rare)

Hot Spots.

40-70 Magic Tower

Location: Moon Bind Swamp

The Magic Tower Can only be entered at 9-10 PM server time, mobs give huge 40-80k a kill, find a party, tank for that party is probably the best bet, it has 3 level groups, 1-40, 1-60 and 1-70. use common sense and go in the one you’re suppose to (actually, some say its better to go in the 1-70 one because it ends quicker and then go back in the lower ones because they’ll still be in progress)

Area
Image

40-55 Dark Zombies and Skeleton Knights

Location: Mont Blanc Port

These Monsters will be a bit harder than anything you’ve fought before, thats because these monsters give about 4-5x more exp!

55-78 Guard Dogs or “Desert Wolves”

Location: The Dark Portal

These things are SO easy to kill! and give a whopping 13k a pop, AND you can start as early as 55, Just remember to bring some sort of heals with you, as they probably damage you quite a bit. (or party with a priest lolololol)

6. Training: 71-105

So this is when things get tricky, once you’re 78, dogs die on you and there’s really no other place to level, my best recommendation is to go to layer of kiera and quest till you get level 80!

Hot Spots.

80-86 Level 90 Forest Dungeon

Location: Alker Harbor

Image

This takes a little explanation, Level 90 forest is very good exp, just don’t do the whole things, and this is only good solo by the way!
First of all don’t even try to kill ogres, ChiPao or Pixy’s they ain’t worth the exp, Avoid them at all costs, they have an attack that lowers Pdef by 30%! :(
kill the small mobs, and then the bosses, Satyr and the Assassin. Now rush over to the next area, Once you get to the harpy and lamia, CAREFULLY pull the lamia and harpy from the mob, WITHOUT pissing off any succubus, you wont have to worry about the boss here, just ignore her. The clock will go down till about 1:00 which is about the time the last mob comes in, there’s a bout 4-5 mobs after that, reconnect to safety zone and start all over again!

OR

_damio wrote:Suggestion for the leveling guide, instead of killing the bosses, just kill the first lot of 8 mobs (all 3 groups) then leave, don’t bother with the Ogres or Satyr, it’s a lot faster.

Choices

Image
That one.

Area
Image
Here’s a map I drew in MS Paint, Numbers indicate the mobs, you wont go past mob 3, in this case.

87-106 Ants
Small creatures, you’ll need about 900 pdef to tank them, 1000+ if you want to take 1’s. if you’ve gone Knight this is a perfect time to utilize your str, or if you went phalanx perfect time to utilize your INT. Ants are ridiculously Weak, making it easy to solo them with enough power.

96-121 The Hornet Quest
Hornet quest! This is when big parties are loved! I really recommend going full vit for this, Hornets SPAM stun, and the damage they do is going to be a great deal higher than ants, so stay alert of that and upgrade your gear, avoid attracting lady bugs, extra mobs are not needed and are discouraged, as they might damage you.

7. Skills (Under Construction)
Image Image Image Image Image Image

Just a note here, only taking skills from classes recommended in guide, but not swordsman as that’s a support-2her not a tanker, similar to rune knight.

Fighter

Defensive Stance
A new passive, Unique to Luna plus, you’ll get it right at a fighter, but I really don’t recommend this skill unless going for pure fledged Pdef/Mdef, its such a small increase for what its worth.
This skill works uniquely, you get level 15 (max) at fighter but each level required is 10 levels between, you’ll need to be level 140 before you max this skill.

Blessing Fighter
Not a tanking skill but still very useful for tanking, this skill works like a toggle, when it is on and your MP is over 70% it will increase DEX and Attack speed.
Attack Speed useful for casting attract/attract circle faster as well as deep spin risen which is also useful for monster gathering, I’d only get level 1 if you’re tanking if you also care about DPS this skill can considerably help improve yours!

Deep Spin Risen
This skill is an AoE unlocked at level 3 fighter, very useful for mobbing in the early game. I’d recommend this skill for any path as its very useful for tanking as well, it brings the monsters toward you when it hits them very easily bringing them into AC range or just to get their attention. The cool down reduces by .8 seconds at level 6

ImageInvisible Rope
(After level 40 you should have enough AoE’s to cycle properly without this skill, stop learning it, forget it later at your 75 reskill.)

This skill just has awful DPS and the attack time it takes to pull it off is gargantuous, this is really only a filler skill, as sad as it may be, as soon as you can funtion without it effeciently, drop it, drop it like bad eggs. 8-)

Guard

Heavy Armor Expertise
This is the backbone tanking stat, and where most of your skill side PDEF will come from, I don’t recommend getting this skill before level 40 unless you’re purely tanker, then be my guest. In later levels this skill is very necessary for any kind of tanking. (This skill says it gives +% pdef and +% HP, the HP is actually VIT.)

Enhance HP
This is one skill I’d recommend against, for the simple fact the HP it gives is so minuscule, as well as the HP recovery, if you ever do get it I say level 11, no higher. to reap the benefits of 2% hp, since 2% HP is about 1000 HP to a vit Paladin. I wouldn’t recommend it for any other class, for any reason otherwise

Level 5 – 175 HP + 1%
Level 10 – 400 HP + 2% / 3 HP Recovery

ImageVital Powerup
All round a good skill but skipable if short on SP. This skill is a must if you’re a pure tank.

8. Reasons to go Paladin Image
After heated debate it has come to me that paladin is a hard choice to pick at 105, many have even questioned if Paladin is a good tanker at all, the added defense and uniqe skills may not add up to say crusaders Mana aura or Magnuses Protection aura but here I’m gonna stand up for paladins a bit as I’ve found valid reasons to pick paladins, they should be consitered but again, the choice is yours.

Tanking Raid Bosses
Paladin has super high levels of attract, allowing them to tank for hundereds of damage dealers, accross a whole server. Let’s do some comparing shall we!?

Phalanx (Sader/Mag) max level Attract Circle
229,059 Threat.

Paladin max level attract circle
850,481 Threat. (Nearly 4 TIMES as much!)

Phalanx max level Attract
427,403 Threat, 6.0% Pdef Reduced. (

Paladin max level Attact
1,916,490 Theat! 8.0% pdef Reduced! (Again, 4x Higher)

Moving on.

Heavy Armor Expertise
Now to add on to Paladins already nice defense, they get the highest level of HAE, this allows them to tank stuff alot easier, also gives them 5.9% more VIT than magnus or crusader, and magnus buffs stack with your own. put this into perspective, if you have 650 vit (max base at 120) this will give you just under 40 vit! thats a lot of vit, not to mention the whole HAE effect gives you over 150 vit, this scales with your level as its %age and not fixed!
Most people think its just vit but vit gives about 1pdef if you’re me (I get about .9 pdef per vit) this pdef is believed to not lower when being mobbed and also gives you more HP to add to your already beefy Paladin HP Bar.

Highest HP Vocational and Multiplier
As you May know Paladins are MADE for HP!
They have the highest HP Multiplier at 24.
Crusaders have 20.
Magnus suffer at 18, with no mana aura either.

What does all this mean?
It means that a Paladin has 1.2x the HP of a crusader and 1.33x the HP of a magnus with equal gear. Vitality and HP %’s stretch this out much farther as its very close to a base stat.

Paladin is a very strong PVE tank with SOME PvP qualities, Paladin should not be reconsitered due to PVP a paladin can be very sucessful in tanking, keeping their friends or even the whole server safe at a time.

Oh yeah and paladins also get 6% more reflect that anyone else.
Notthatitmatterssincestupidhelmisstupid
(But IMO they should totally flip the helm and DB around, let paladins hog 1xx% reflect, no reasons for mages to have 100% patk reflect, but thats just me talkin.)
9. Extra Note: Eva Vs. Pdef
Now the last thing I am is an evasion kind of person, I very much dislike the evasion system and I don’t utilize it at all, the way I feel is that if I’m taking damage in pdef, I’d be taking damage in Eva, I’m not going to sacrifice Armor or Speed or especially valuable VIT status points to evade a boss that’s damage can be reduce and is very tankable.

How about magical defense? Full vit paladin will be very weak in tanking magical enemies? adding a bit of wisdom recommended?
