Marvel Heroes Choosing a New Character Guide

Marvel Heroes Choosing a New Character Guide by DankRage

Let me start out by saying with as much diversity and playstyles that the amount of characters in this game have, some of your experiences may vary.

This “guide” is purely nothing but my opinion and insight from the game knowledge I’ve accrued over years of this playing in this genre.

So, you’re looking for someone new to play, huh?! Awesome! Let’s try to figure out how we can bring you and new main together in a glorious union!

A good solid choice is to always see if your favorite superhero is already in the game and giving them a shot first. Even if the character may not be top tier, you can still have fun enjoying the character in itself — and everything else can just fall into place.

Otherwise… :D

1) You’re going to have to find out what kind of play style appeals to you.

  • Do you like being in the middle of fights, up front and center, taking and dealing the deeps? You could try a Bruiser or Fighter like Venom or Moon Knight.
  • Do you like to be at the back of the fights, throwing spells or shooting projectiles? You might enjoy a Caster or Marksman like Storm or Cyclops.
  • Do you like being in and out of the fight having things fight for/with you as your own personal minion? You might want to play a Summoner or Pet user like Squirrel Girl or Emma Frost?

Bruisers tend to prioritize a lot more defenses like Health and Defense rating to compliment their skill kits allowing for more damage or sustainability through synergy. They can build more offensively, and most do — but some just feel like a brick wall more than others.

Fighters usually have a craving for more offensive stats like Critical Strike Rating or Brutal Strike Rating and their respective multipliers (Crit Damage and Brutal Damage ratings) that would compliment their skill kits of high damage. (High Risk/Reward)

Casters are primarily your spell users that incorporate mental or energy abilities. They build along the same paths as Fighters but usually supplement a bit of %Base Damage or specific +Damage Rating to augment their skill kits that contain damage multpliers. (Critical or Brutal Strike)

Marksmen build similar to Casters and Fighters as they need to rely more on their ability to dodge attacks and sustain damage through Life on Hit or Med-Kit augmentation. Critical Strike and Brutal Strike are heavily favored here, with bits of %Base Damage or +Damage Rating to spice things up.

Summoners fancy quite a bit of %Summoned Ally Damage/Duration and over-all general offensive stats such as Critical/Brutal Strike, %Base Damage and +Damage Rating when it comes to gear stats. Not too many in the game that are heavy “Summon” focused but there’s a few looking to scratch that itch. As long as the ability you’re using has the “Summon” tag in it’s tool-tip, it is affected by %Summoned Ally Damage/Duration as well as your Critical/Brutal Strike rating. Pets (Non “Summon” tagged, Item-triggered summons i.e. Uniques, Artifacts, Insignias, etc) are not affected by the above bonuses.

2) Once you have your idea of the kind of play style you like, you can apply that to certain sub-sections like:

  • AoE (Area of Effect) or Single target DPS
  • Energy, Physical, Mental or Hybrid DPS
  • Raid, Cosmic Terminal or other End-Game content effectiveness

3) After identifying the play style you’re looking for and what kind of character you want to make, you can then apply that to the current roster and make a few good choices to then narrow down later.

4) Here are some general groupings of characters and their general and optional play styles. Some characters will be in multiple groupings due to multiple build options. (They may not always be optimal, but can be) The groups are categorized , in my opinion, in no particular order, only signifying their similar play style.*

Single Target DPS = ST

Area of Effect DPS = AoE (Will indicate amount using Major/Minor) (Ex. Captain America has quite a few AoE attacks therefore he’d contribute Major AoE. Versus Moon Knight who has very little thus contributing Minor AoE.)

4a) If you’re still wondering what you want to do as far as a new character is concerned feel free to utilize these awesome websites for a bit of a nudge:

  • MH Info — Arguably the best online compendium of Marvel Heroes info on the net. Builds, Guides, Item Rolls, Quests, etc. Tons and tons of useful info that could point you in the right direction.
  • Forums — The official website forums. Great place for Character Discussion, Builds, Guides, Super Groups, Spoilers, etc.
  • Patch Notes — Incase you’re gone for a while and are coming back after a hiatus or just havent taken a peak at what just got buffed/nerfed. All the recent changes to the game/characters will be found here.
  • Test Center — Possibly the best way to definitively find out what character is right for you. You can download it, install it and play ANY hero currently released — and even some unreleased content as well! You even get free G’s!!(sadly it stays on the TC) But its great to actually test out characters or to see if you’d want to try a costume before you buy it and see how it really looks!
  • Twitch.tv — Awesome community of streamers and content creators. Look here for live gameplay and game discussion that could cover many, many subjects.

That’s pretty much all I can think of at the moment. Hopefully this helps out a lot of new players or ones just having trouble picking something to play. Feel free to add your opinions and suggestions that I may have forgotten. I will be updating this periodically as more specifics come back to mind and more characters as they come out.

There is still a lot to be desired when it comes to finding out what or who you want to play. But maybe this is the stepping stone you need to get started. Either way, enjoy!

xoxo Dank
