PART 1: Common Questions about the Sorcerer:

Q: “Are Sorcerers good for PvE?”
A: Sorcerers are currently one of top sustained damage classes in TERA with the highest burst potential (disregarding slayers at low HP), and best AOE damage in game. With the addition of Teleport in more recent patches, we can be highly mobile when needed. For the most part you will be positioning yourself behind most BAMs and mobs while partied, which allows you to maximize damage output with certain gear bonuses and crystals (I will get into that later in the guide).

Q: “Are Sorcerers good for PvP?”
A: Yes! The role of a Sorcerer in pvp is fairly simple: ranged nuke class with a perfect amount of CC. As mentioned in the PvE question, Sorcerers currently have the highest burst damage and AOE damage in game. This damage output does come at a cost: Sorcerers are the only non-healing cloth class which makes us overall “squishy” in certain situations. Along with lower armor values, cloth classes have a higher chance to be knocked down (lower balance on cloth). This means you need to work hard at avoiding attacks and focus on kiting in PvP (facetanking a Berserker will not get you very far). I will not go into too much detail for spell chains since TERA is an action based MMO, there are many ways to kill an enemy. Positioning is VERY important to success (to all classes) and you’ll find yourself chaining a variety of abilities in different circumstances against each class.

Q: ”Sorcerers feel slow and clunky, does this get better?”
A: We start of slow until we reach 48, which is when the real fun begins (you’ll see why later in the post). You will always have to deal with “animation pauses” (which is why Sorcerers feel “clunky”) when launching certain abilities; some animations are longer than others .

Q: “I seem to run out of mana quickly, is this normal?”
A: Yes this is normal, but we have abilities to regen mana and mana pools become slightly larger as you level with gear. One thing to note: MP Cost for abilities does NOT change with new ability ranks.

Q: “How can I break animation as a Sorcerer like I do on my Warrior or Lancer?”
A: Once “completing” a spell cast your animations CANNOT be broken. Certain spell animations can be broken during the initial “casting” phase by moving, using backstep, or teleport (I will go into more detail about this with each ability).

Q: “What do you mean by “Animation Pause”?”:
A: The conventional “global cool down” system does not exist in TERA as many MMOs; this has been “replaced” in most cases by an animation. Some abilities will cause your character to remain stationary when activating them, this is what I will be referring to as an “animation pause” in this guide.

Q: “What are advanced/master Glyphs?”:
A: These glyphs are obtainable at level 58 and above, by running the “training ground” instance. You will obtain tokens that allow you to purchase master glyphs when completing the instance. You cannot stack same glyph for the same ability if one is Master and the other is regular.

Q: “What Glyphs build should I go?”:
A: There really isn’t “one build” for a Sorcerer. There are certain glyphs that you NEVER want to go without (such as Burst of Celerity glyph) but there are also multiple ways you can build your glyph set up. A few possible builds will be mentioned in part 3.

PART 2: Main Sorcerer abilities/glyphs

Following a similar system as Nalfen’s glyphs, here’s the breakdown of the system:
[x(x2), y] – x = points required for glyph. (x2) = Master Glyph cost. Y = level required to obtain glyph.
Colour code:
Amazing Glyph
Good Glyph
Average Glyph
Mediocre Glyph
Poor Glyph

Total ranks available:10
Cool down: None, based off animation speed
Cast Time: Instant
MP Cost 10
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[3,20] Glyph of Longshot – “Increases range by 3 meters.” There really isn’t a need to increase your auto attack range.

Flame Pillar:

Description:Summon a column of flames in 1.5m front of you that burns enemies within 3m.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 1, 8, 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56
Skill power at levels: 29, 45, 66, 96, 140, 204, 298, 434, 634, 925
Total ranks available:10
Cool down: 4s immediately after activation
MP Cost 160
Cast Time: Instant
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[5,20] Glyph of Power – “Increases power by 25%.” While flame pillar is still used at max level, you do not use it often enough to warrant spending points 5.
[6,25] Glyph of Sharing – “Increases damage when skill hits multiple targets.” Again, not worth spending 6 points as you won’t be using flame pillar often enough.
[3,28] Glyph of Blaze – “Speeds casting by 40% for Lighting Trap, the next skill in the chain.” Could prove to be of some use during pvp encounters with burst of celerity up.
[(3),58] Glyph of Indignacy – “8% chance to trigger Mana Barrier I” Unsure if it’s 8% per hit, but it’s still a very low chance to activate and not worth purchasing this glyph.

Mana Infusion:

Description:You regain 120 MP (160 rank 2) every 2 second for 25 seconds. Effect Remains even if you take damage or attack. Will tick a total of 12 times for 1440 MP (1920 rank 2)
Ability acquired/upgraded at: levels 2, 38
Cool down: 10s, begins after initial cast animation. Moving before animation completion does not activate cool down.
Cast Time: 4.5s
Duration: 25s Buff
Animation pause: yes, when initial 4.5s cast completes.

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Spirit: – “Increases MP regeneration by 10%.” Will give an additional 144 MP (192 rank 2) over 25 seconds, not worth 4 points.

Backstep:

Description:Take quick steps backward and out of harm’s way. Activating backstep will place a 5s cooldown on Teleport Jaunt.
Ability acquired at: level 2
Cool down: 5s
Cast Time: Instant
MP Cost 85
Distance: ~7m
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[3,32] Glyph of Indignacy –“20% chance to trigger Overchannel.” While you’ll be using teleport more often, you will still use backstep at times. While not entirely terrible, it can be somewhat useful considering it disregards Overchannel cool down/animation

Magma Bomb:

Description: Arc a fiery projectile 10m away, where it explodes in a 3m radius.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 4, 10, 16, 22, 28, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58
Skill power at levels: 48, 70, 102, 149, 218, 318, 464, 677, 869, 1268
Total ranks available:10
Cool down: 7s – Begins after animation (when spell lands)
Cast Time: Instant
MP Cost 340
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Brilliance – “Decreases MP consumption by 100.” While not great on its own, a combination of Glyph of Persistence can save quite a bit of mana if you’re lucky with procs.
[4,20] Glyph of Persistence –“30% chance to eliminate cool down.” This glyph can activate multiple times in a row, making it pretty desirable to have.

Painful Trap:

Description:Set a trap that explodes when stepped on. Trap lasts 10 seconds.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 6, 18, 30, 42, 56
Skill power at levels: 49, 104, 221, 471, 1137
Total ranks available:5
Cool down: 30s after cast animation completes (cannot break cast animation with movement)
Cast Time: 1.8s
MP Cost 300
Radius: 5m
Range: Lands 1m in front of caster
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Brilliance – “Decreases MP consumption by 75.” 75 mana reduction on a skill that has a 30s cooldown isn’t great (not to mention you won’t be using painful trap all too often)
[4,20] Glyph of Influence – “Reduces MP cost for the next chain skill by 80: Flame Pillar.” See above, not worth spending points.

Time Gyre:

Description:Briefly decrease the movement speed of up to 3 targets within 18m, making their speed 0. Prevents other players from using evading skills. Effect ends when the target is attacked. Press the skill button once and mouseover to lock on targets, then press the skill button again to shoot at all targets.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 8, 32, 58
Total ranks available:3
Cool down: 60s
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 400
Duration: 8s
Animation pause: no

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 15%.” This creates a 51s cooldown instead of 60s. Moderately useful for CC builds.
[7(4),20(58)] Glyph of Multiplication – “Increases number of lock-on targets by 2.” While the regular glyph has a steep cost of 7 points, the Master glyph is great for only 4 points. Extra 2 targets could save you or your healer in a time of need.
[4,26] Glyph of Blaze – “Speeds casting by 25% for Fireblast, the next skill in the chain.” Despite the longer cooldown on Time Gyre this can be great for pvp (and in some pve situations).

Ice Needle:

Description:”Launch an ice shard up to 18m that briefly slows target’s movement speed by 20%.” Will pierce through multiple targets, decreasing in damage for each target hit.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 10, 16, 22, 28, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58
Skill power at levels: 52, 76, 111, 162, 236, 344, 502, 733, 1069
Total ranks available:9
Cool down: 7s
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 300
Duration: 5s
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 30%.” Shaves 2s off of ice needle making it a 5s cooldown, this can be useful for solo leveling
[3,20] Glyph of Lingering – “Increases effect duration by 50%.” Great when combined with “Glyph of Energy[Ice Needle]” giving it a 7.5s duration, makes for a proper kiting build.
[3,20] Glyph of Numbing – “Increases slowing effect by 20%.” Another great glyph if you’re looking for a kiting build, additional movement reduction is always key.
[3,20] Glyph of Blaze – “Speeds casting by 40% for Mindblast, the next skill in the chain.” Combining this glyph with Burst of Celerity (glyphed) and Mindblast’s “Glyph of Haste” will allow you to cast Mindblast incredibly fast.

Retaliate:

Description:Leap to your feet while attacking the target. You can use this skill only when knocked down.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60
Skill power at levels: 39, 57, 83, 121, 176, 257, 375, 547, 798
Total ranks available:8
Cool down: 15s
Cast Time: instant
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 20%.” Even if this glyph only removes 2s from the cool down, those 2s can save your life in pvp where timing means everything.
[5,52] Glyph of Shield – 50% chance of activating Mana Barrier II. Level 52. This ability can activate regardless of Mana Barrier being on cooldown (will not activate the cooldown either)

Painblast:

Description:Up to 5 targets within a 4m radius centered 10m in front of you take 26 damage every 2 seconds for 10 seconds. Does less damage to other players.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 14, 20, 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56
Skill power at levels (DOT static damage in brackets): 58(26), 84(40), 123(58), 180(85), 262(121), 382(174), 558(241), 814(341)
Total ranks available: 8
Cool down: 30s
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 300
Animation pause: yes, however can move prior to landing skill. Does not consume cool down on cancellation.

Available Glyphs:
[7,20] Glyph of Lingering – “Increases effect duration by 40%.” The damage provided by Painblast’s dot is insignificant making this a poor choice of glyphs.
[5,20] Glyph of Blossom – “Increases periodic damage by by 20%.” 20% increase on a dot that already does low damage is still not great.
[5,20] Glyph of Numbing – “50% chance to decrease opponent’s speed by 50% for 7 seconds.” This can be useful in pvp situations, unfortunately the 5 point cost lowers its value.
[(3),58] Glyph of Energy – “Cool down time decreased by 25%”. Combining this with Glyph of Numbing can be useful for pvp, otherwise not useful outside of that.

Mana Siphon:

Description:Charge up your attack by holding down the skill button, then release it to take MP from targets within 18m. While charging up, you can move at full speed.
Ability acquired at: level 14
Cool down: 13s
Cast Time: instant, 3 tier charged ability
Animation pause: yes, can move while charging ability (charging can be cancelled by teleport/backstep)

Available Glyphs:
[3,20] Glyph of Spirit – “Increases MP regeneration by 10%.” The 3 points are better spent elsewhere if you’re concerned with mana.
[3,20] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 20%.” Removes 2s from the cooldown, not a significant glyph.
[2,20] Glyph of Blaze – “Speeds casting by 25% for Flaming Barrage, the next skill in the chain.” The low point cost of this glyph can make it useful for kiting situations.
[5,32] Glyph of Indignacy– “20% chance to trigger Overchannel.” While not a terrible glyph (disregards overchannel cool down/animation), the point cost makes it less than average.

Glacial Retreat:

Description:Freeze the ground before you as you leap backwards, briefly decreasing the movement speed of your target by 70%.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 16, 22, 28, 34, 40, 46, 52, 58
Skill power at levels: 57, 83, 122, 178, 259, 378, 552, 806
Total ranks available: 8
Cool down: 8s
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 150
Duration: 5s
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Lingering – “Increases effect duration by 40%.” Great for kiting builds.
[4,30] Glyph of Blaze – “Speeds charging by 30% for Arcane Pulse, the next skill in the chain.” Combining this ability with Glyph of the Slick[Arcane Pulse] could prove valuable in pvp, unfortunately I have not tested this for myself and cannot comment on viability.
[4,28] Glyph of Blaze – “Speeds casting by 40% for Lightning Trap, the next skill in the chain.” Glacial retreat > Burst of Celerity > Lightning Trap combo can prove affective to get players off of you in pvp.
[4,32] Glyph of Indignacy – “35% chance to trigger Overchannel.” Similar to the other Overchannel triggering glyphs, this is disregards cool down/animation for overchannel

Arcane Pulse:

Description:Charge up the pulse’s attack power by holding down the skill button, then release the button to hit targets in a 21m line.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60
Skill power at levels: 220, 321, 469, 684, 998, 1456, 2125, 3101
Total ranks available: 7
Cool down: 10s
Cast Time: 3 charge levels, stationary (can move with advanced glyph)
MP Cost 124, 124, 124, 248 (3 charge levels + max charge)
Animation pause: yes (can cancel charge by using backstep/teleport)

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Power – “Increases power by 25%.” Arcane pulse is a fairly situational ability, 4 points can be better spent elsewhere.
[5,20] Glyph of Powerlink – “Increases power for the next chain skill by 25%: Ice Needle.” The point cost of this may not warrant the increased power.
[4,58] Glyph of Carving – “Doubles critical hit rate for 4s.” This glyph has potential if using a combo such as: Burst of celerity > Arcane pulse(uncharged) > Fire blast > Hail Storm
[4,58] Glyph of the Slick – “Enables moving while charging.” I unfortunately have not had the chance to test this, so I cannot comment on it fully. I can say that it would GREATLY improve the use of Arcane pulse.

Flaming Barrage:

Description:Press the skill button once and mouseover to lock on to 4 targets within 18m, then press the skill button again to shoot at all targets.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 20, 32, 44, 56
Skill power at levels: 221, 450, 958, 2040
Total ranks available: 4
Cool down: 3 seconds
Cast Time: 1.5s
MP Cost 600
Animation pause: yes (full movement speed while locking on, 1.5s animation pause after activating)

Available Glyphs:
[4,20] Glyph of Brilliance – “Decreases MP consumption by 150.” This is useful at early levels and to cut back on mana consumption in pvp.
[4,20] Glyph of Multiplication – 4 points: Increases number of lock-on targets by 1.” Considering Flame Barrage decreases in power when multiple targets are hit, this lowers the value of this glyph

Teleport Jaunt:

Description:Teleport a short distance in the direction the camera faces. Activating Teleport Jaunt will place a 5s cooldown on backstep.
Ability acquired at: level 22
Cool down: 12s
Cast Time: Instant
MP Cost 120
Distance: 14m
Animation pause: yes (very brief after teleporting)

Available Glyphs:
[3,22] Glyph of Persistence – ”25% chance to eliminate cool down.” Always try to fit this into your glyph builds as it will increase your mobility by a significant amount. The fact that it can proc multiple times in a row allows you to slip away with ease.

Mindblast:

Description:Briefly put targets to sleep in a 4m radius centered 10m in front of you. Sleep will break when the player/mob takes damage.
Ability acquired at: level 24, 50
Cool down: 30s, begins immediately.
Cast Time: 3.2s
MP Cost 400
Duration: 10s
Animation pause: yes (can cancel during cast, will consume cool down)

Available Glyphs:
[4,24] Glyph of Lingering – “Increases effect duration by 50%.” An extra 5s added to your sleep can be valuable.
[5,24] Glyph of Haste – “Speeds casting by 30%.” It can be easy for enemies to move out of Mindblast, this will reduce the amount of time they have to move.
[5,24] Glyph of Persistence – “25% chance to eliminate cool down.” Enemies are not always grouped together, this allows you to lay down sleeps in multiple locations if it procs (or try to sleep again if your target resisted).
[5(4),24(58)] Glyph of Sharing – “Increases chance of debuff by 30% when skill hits multiple targets.” It’s frustrating when sleeping multiple enemies and a few resist, this will help with those situations.

Fireblast:

Description: Blast targets in a flaming circle with a 4m radius centered 10m in front of you.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 26, 32, 38, 44, 50, 56
Skill power at levels: 652, 951, 1388, 2025, 2954, 4311
Total ranks available: 6
Cool down: 12s
Cast Time: 4.4s
MP Cost 1000
Animation pause: yes (can cancel during cast, will consume cool down)

Available Glyphs:
[5(4),26] Glyph of Haste – “Speeds casting by 17%.” While 17% doesn’t seem like much, it allows you to chain off skills faster maximizing damage output and mobility.
[4,26] Glyph of Brilliance – “Decreases MP consumption by 250.” Great for builds looking to reduce overall MP usage.
[6,26] Glyph of Impulsion – “30% chance to eliminate MP cost.” You will be using Fireblast every opportunity you have, a 30% chance to eliminate 1000 mana cost can add up.
[7(6),26(58)] Glyph of Sharing – “Increases damage when skill hits multiple targets.” Since multiple enemies will take reduced damage when hit from fire blast, this glyph will significantly increase your AOE damage output.

Lightning Trap:

Description:Set a ring-shaped trap that briefly paralyzes its victims. Trap lasts 10 seconds.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 28, 52
Skill power at levels: 181, 821
Total ranks available: 2
Cool down: 30s
Cast Time: 2.2s
MP Cost 400
Duration: 6s
Radius: 5m
Range: Lands 1m in front of caster
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[5(4),28(58)] Glyph of Powerlink – “Increases power for the next chain skill by 20%: Fireblast.” Can be useful in some pvp/pve situations. This activates after casting Lightning trap, not when an enemy hits it.
[4(2),28(58)] Glyph of Brilliance – “Decreases MP consumption by 100.” Not useful, no need to decrease Lightning Trap’s MP cost
[4,28] Glyph of Blaze – “Speeds casting by 25% for Flame Pillar, the next skill in the chain.” Not a bad ability to quickly hit an enemy with flame pillar as they get stunned by your lightning trap, but also not great

Overchannel:

Description:Your next attack within 20 seconds does 25% more damage.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 32, 38, 44, 50, 56
Cool down at levels: 20s, 18s, 15s, 12s, 10s
Total ranks available: 8
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 400
Duration: 20s Buff
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[2,36] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 30%” The usefulness of this glyph will decrease as you gain higher ranks of Overchannel (each rank decrease CD by 2s down to 10s)

Void Pulse:

Description:Launch a powerful sphere at a single target within 21m.
Ability acquired/upgrade at: levels 36, 42, 48, 54, 60
Skill power at levels: 901, 1315, 1919, 2800, 4086

Cool down: 15s
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 1000
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[4,36] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 20%.” Will reduce the cooldown to 12s, great for increasing damage output
[4(3),36(58)] Glyph of Brilliance – “Decreases MP consumption by 250.” Great for reducing overall MP consumption in MP reduction builds

Mana Barrier:

Ability acquired at: level 40, level 52
Cool down: 90s
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 200 (to activate)
Animation pause: yes

Available Glyphs:
[3,40] Glyph of the Pump – “Increases strength by 10% for 15 seconds.” 10% strength increase adds up and allows you to hit harder, at
[4,40] Glyph of Grounding – “Increases endurance by 20% for 15 seconds.”
[2,40] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 20%.” Reduces cooldown to 72s. Combining this with Glyph of Lingering allows you to drastically increase your survivability.
[4,40] Glyph of Lingering – “Increases effect duration by 50%.” Increases duration to 67.5s. Combining this with Glyph of Energy allows you to drastically increase your survivability.
[4,58] Glyph of Resolution – “Increases the maximum amount of damage absorbed by 30%.” Increases your shield absorb amount to 17588, an increase of 4059 damage. At a 4 point cost, this master glyph is great.

Burning Breath:

Description rank 1: Shoot a fiery blaze that inflicts 1175 damage every 2 seconds for 10 seconds on up to 1 targets within 15m. Deals less damage to other players. Press the skill button once and mouseover to lock on targets, then press the skill button again to shoot at all targets.

Ability acquired/upgraded at: level 44, 50, 56
Cool down: 30s
Cast Time: 1s
MP Cost 500
Animation pause: no

Available Glyphs:
[5,44] Glyph of Lingering – “Increases effect duration by 20%.” Adds 1 additional tick of burning breath, not entirely useful.
[4,44] Glyph of Powerlink – “Increases power for the next chain skill by 35%: Flaming Barrage.” Can be used in combination with Glyph of Interception to help burst down targets in pvp.
[4,58] Glyph of Interception – “Reduces opponent’s HP recovery by 50% for 10 seconds. Effective only on other players.” I have to test if this is able to be dispelled, otherwise I would rate it an amazing glyph.

Burst of Celerity:

Description:Your attack speed increases by 20% for 15 seconds.
Ability acquired at: level 48
Cool down: 25s
Cast Time: instant
MP Cost 375
Animation pause: no

Available Glyphs:
[5,48] Glyph of Swift – “Increases attack speed by 50%.” Always glyph this, this will increase your burst potential and mobility by a great amount.

Hail Storm:

Description:Creates an ice storm that lasts 8 seconds and inflicts periodic damage to all targets in a 6m radius centered 12m in front of you, reducing their speed by 10% with each hit. Effect stacks up to 4 times.

[5,52] Glyph of Brilliance – “Decreases MP consumption by 300.” While Hail Storm is a GREAT ability, it comes at a high MP cost.

Nerve Exhaustion:

Cast Time: 1s
MP Cost 300
Animation pause: no

Available Glyphs:
[4(3),56(58)] Glyph of Energy – “Decreases cool down by 20%.” Reduces cooldown to 96s. I personally haven’t had a chance to play around with Nerve exhaustion much in group pvp, so cannot comment on the viability of this glyph in pvp.

Mana Volley:

Description:Up to 4 targets within 15m lose 25% of their total MP immediately and 172 further MP every 2 seconds for 10 seconds. This affects only other players. However, hitting any target restores 25% of your total MP. Press the skill button once and mouseover to lock on targets, then press the skill button again to shoot at all targets.
Ability acquired at: level 58
Cool down: 180s
