Refining = Upgrading your armor, and weapons. if you look at a weapon or clothing item you’ll see it has a grade

Refine System Changes

Grades 1-5 upon failure will degrade 1 (Plutorune will prevent degrade 1)
Grades 6-10 upon failure will break (Plutorune will prevent Break, but item will degrade 1)
Grades 11-15 upon failure will degrade 2 (Plutorune will prevent degrade by 1)

Item Mall items only

Grades 1-5 upon failure will not be altered
Grades 6-10 upon failure will degrade 1 (Plutorune will prevent degrade by 1)
Grades 11-15 upon failure will degrade 2 (Plutorune will prevent degrade by 1)

Refine Grade Values

* Refine values scaled down slightly on grades 1 ~ 9.
* Refine levels have been extended to grade level 15, with bonuses that well exceed the old level 9 bonuses.

* New refine Catalyst items (Chemicals) are now available.

Refine System

* Catalyst items can be used to influence the success rates of refining.
* An indication display of the success chances for a refine has been added to the refine menu.
* Each refine will require 1 Rune (Bindrune/Talisman/Apotrope) & at least 1 Catalyst
* Catalyst Items will add to the success rate during any refine (up to 20 of the same Catalyst can be used during any single refine attempt)
* Venarune will yield 5% to a refine attempt (up to 2 of Venarunes can be used during any single refine attempt)
* Plutorune will protect based on the below chart (only 1 Plutorune can be used during any single refine attempt)
* Neptarune will protect based on the same Plutorune chart below and offer an additional 5% to the success rate
* The Refine UI will now show the % success rate the refine will have

In the main towns you can refine at these NPCS: Crune in Junon city, Raffle in Zant, Mairath in Breezy Hills, Pavrick in Luna and Nel Eldora in Xita Refuge [for those 120+]

We have 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th and 8th grade talismans, currently in-game.
The same goes for Bindrunes. As said above, there is not a 9th grade.

Note:Face items cannot be refined.

Degrading (failing): refining may fail and, if it is the case, the item will be degraded to a random lower level between 0 and 7 depending on the grade

Upgrading and requirements:

Some items have a pre-req to being equipped or used. They mostly apply to gears and weapons A requirement can be a Job or minimum character level to meet prior to equipping the item, or a stat requirement such as: INT/STR/DEX/CON usually its weapons, shields and off hands with stat requirements. Regardless of the stat/job requirement you can still refine the item :]

Durability: affects dodge on armor and backitems, and accuracy on weapons

Talismans: can be used to upgrade any graded weapon. It will add a certain amount of attack power
The higher the refine, the more AP you’ll get out of it.

Bindrunes: can be used to upgrade any graded hat, armor, shoes or gloves.
The higher the refine, the more defense it will add.

Apotrope: can be used to upgrade any graded back item or wings. They add a certain amount of defense. (6,7,8th Grade Apotropes have been released)

Brave Talismans and bindrunes
Brave talismans can be used to refine Brave weapons
Brave bindrunes can be used to refine brave gear (shoes, vest, gloves, hat)

Brave items no longer break!!

Scarabs: used for refining unique items which no longer break until going (8) and (9) also degrade while refining 0-7
You need 5 scarabs per refine level.

Event Items (obtained from ROSE events):
can be refined with Jupiterunes, you can get these from Disassembling other event items. these do not break while refining :]

Satarunes (for Item Mall items): Some Item Mall items can also be refined with Satarunes which are also bought in the Item Mall, the only difference with those, is that they do not break they just fail

Venarunes a 10% success addition to your item.

Drills are dropped from various monsters and can be used to place a gem into the socket the drill has made. (you’ll see a somewhat empty spot on the item if it succeeds)
There are 4 types:
Mythril (lowest success rate)
Orihalcon (medium success rate)
Adamantium (highest success rate)
Demon Metal drill from the Item Mall that is 80% chance of success
and also acquire a Perfect Drill from the Item Mall chests.

Face items,wings,backshields, and shields cannot be drilled;

If the drill fails, it will not break, it will just disappear from your inventory :]
Drilling is based on luck/randomness whatever you want to call it, they might not work right away, just be patient

Note: if you drill and gem an item you will lose the sub stat (they are in blue, but not bolded in the item description.)
ALSO: If you gem a drilled item, you CANNOT remove the gem!(although there has been some talk about Gem Removal being implemented)

You’ll find that monsters/bosses drop the bindrunes/talismans, catalysts and drills
