Land-Based Beasties

Image Spider
Spiders are creatures that are found in groups. They will not attack unless provoked. Instead, they will simply trap you in their web and flee the area. Have a friend on hand to help you out of their web.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Dagger, Shield
Gold drop: 34
Item drop: Silk

Image Troll
A Troll is a man with a foul face and a better body than mind. Though the average Troll cannot deal with the complexities presented by a full-fledged civilization, they are more than suited for their simple tribal lives and have survived in the Parallel Kingdom for millennia. Trolls have three universal taboos that outsiders should be aware of. First, Trolls will protect their children with their lives. Their children are small-nosed, almost hairless, and have soft faces – like men. Trolls know men are a different species, but they have trouble killing something that looks so similar to what they hold so dear. Second, they hold Mourning Trees sacred. If they find a tree bleeding, they will kill you without a second thought. Lastly, they never travel alone. Adventurers attacking a single Troll in the forest may discover rather quickly that his friends were lurking nearby.

Trolls are friendly, unless provoked through violence or chopping down a Mourning Tree. If a troll is attacked, beware that up to two other trolls may arrive as backup. They are naturally found in large numbers around troll huts. They also are your source for Roc Feathers, which are used to visit different areas.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Sword, Shield/Breastplate
Gold drop: 13
Item drop: Swords, Axes, Breastplates, Shields, Mourning Berries, Backpacks

Image Dire Wolf
Men hate wolves because they are smart, they plan, and they hate us. Any tribal society knows that the wolves are their most dangerous enemy. Maybe the wolves simply want the land we take up, or the animals we kill, but, maybe, they watched us make the dogs so many years ago, and simply refuse to forgive. A pack of wolves will actively hunt and attack lone creatures. Five can be expected to kill an unarmed man, if not a boar. Luckily, in this world, the wolves have not yet learned that men tend to carry lengths of well honed steel.

Dire wolves are an easy kill if they are solitary, but they are often found in packs and are dangerous when it comes to large numbers. They will attack if you approach too closely, but sometimes flee if critically wounded.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Sword, Shield
Gold drop: 14
Item drop: Leather

Image Stag
A stag will never directly engage anything, but if attacked it will defend itself, if only to allow the rest of its herd time to escape. The problem – when a stag defends itself. it goes into a rage. When in a rage, the stag goes blind so when a group of stags perceive a threat, sometimes all of them react to the threat. Some have likened it to a stampede, and their behavior has certainly caused more than one such cataclysmic rush.

Stags, like dire wolves, are often found in packs. They are peaceful creatures and will sometimes flee if critically wounded, but be warned: if you attack one, you may have to deal with the whole herd. They often drop leather, needed for a Flag.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Sword, Shield/Breastplate
Gold drop: 8
Item drop: Leather

Image Troodont
The Troodonts, after 65 million years of struggling, now desire to experience the whole civilization thing. Despite a lack of thumbs and their inborn tendencies toward cannibalism, they have strung together a relatively complex, quasi-feudal society complete with art, metalworking, and politics. As the Troodont society continues to grow ever larger, more of their kind feel threatened with the prospect of becoming dinner. Each elder Troodont exerts control over a region and forces its lessers to guard and maintain the area. Once a Troodont has gained control of a region, they will be unwilling to give it up – even if it means the slaughter of their vassals. For that matter, Troodonts do not like giving anything up, and if you do not want them to attack you, then do not brandish Troodont made equipment at them, it makes them especially angry.

Troodonts are similar to dire wolves, but more aggressive. They are found in groups, and will chase you across the map just to watch you bleed. They are similar with stags in that they will protect each other if attacked.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Spear, Shield/Breastplate
Gold drop: 13
Item drop: Spears, Daggers, Shields, Breastplates

Image Crawler
Crawlers are horrible creatures. Living in the mud, they resemble a cross between a chambered nautilus and the star display of a carnival freakshow. Crawlers latch onto their pray using its two long tentacles and once attached begin to chew. Luckily, a single crawler can only deal a little damage, and it only takes two good strikes to kill them. However, if left alone, they will kill their intended victim, and when presented with a suitable corpse, they will burrow inside and lay their eggs. Be aware of any corpse killed by these things, they are likely waiting nearby.

Crawlers are unlike any other creature. They are found in small groups, but will only attack if you come too close. They do not attack as a group, unless you approach each one individually. If they catch your scent, they stick onto your character until one of you is dead.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Dagger, Breastplate
Gold drop: 13
Item drop: None

Image Boar
Wild boars are mean and dumb. If something offends them, they will chase it down, kill it, and if they’re hungry, eat it. Not to mention they will mangle the body when they are through. It is hard to tell what will enrage a boar: travelers have seen the beasts walking through a forest, only to suddenly charge a tree and rip it down. That said, moving things tend to draw a boar’s attention more easily than nearby rocks and bushes. You will be attacked if you approach one too closely.

Boars are solitary creatures, and will chase you around the map. They fight to the end and never flee when wounded. They will only attack if you approach too closely.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Spear, Breastplate
Gold drop: 34
Item drop: Leather

Image Larva
Larva have been called the bane of life. Awake, they never stop eating until their own mass is enough to kill them. When they die, their rot poisons the earth below them for years. The sickly white, bloated creatures can destroy a village, field, or forest as they suck down anything that lingers in their path. Luckily, Larva spend long periods dormant underground and, unlike their namesake, no one in the Parallel Kingdom has ever seen one metamorphose into something new. These small boons are forgotten when one is roused and eats a many-mile-long path of destruction. Fighting a Larva is usually considered suicidal, though it is possible. The Larva’s mouth is lined with thousands of sharp teeth and their massive gelatinous body absorbs the most considerable blows with ease. The only consistent ways to kill a Larva is to somehow hack through enough of its flesh to destroy its tiny brain, or to simply hack it into pieces hoping it won’t notice.

Larva wander the map, and attack anything. Larva are unpredictable, they may be attacking you at one moment and just leave you be the next. Be warned that they constantly regain health. Larva drop ingredients necessary to make Halvar’s Resin.

Image Dragon
A dragon is massive and only grows larger as it ages until, as rumors go, they are the size of the hills and mountains. They like to be left alone. Waking a dragon is a sure sign of an impending death, unless you are a seasoned warrior.

Dragons are an infamous creature in Parallel Kingdom. They are always solitary, and are extremely powerful unless you use a Spear or a Dagger. A Dragon will inflict its share of damage, but if you manage to kill it, it is definitely worth it.

When in Combat
Best Weapon Set: Spear, Shield
Gold drop: 139
Item drop: Swords, Spears, Axes, Daggers, Shields, Breastplates, Backpacks

Image Magnathere
The Magnathere can only be called massive. Superficially, it appears to be a cross between an elephant and rhinoceros, but weighing up to 80 tons, it dwarfs both. It is fortunate then that the beast is a gentle herbivore, entirely harmless if left to its own devices. Magnatheres love thistle, but will eat any plants they come across, and, instinctively, they hate being boxed in – taking incredibly circuitous courses to avoid forests.
If a man felt compelled to kill a Magnathere he would do well to have a sharp Spear and many friends. When its inches of hide are pierced, it will strike with enough force to fell any warrior.

Fighting and killing a Magnathere alone is an extremely rare feat. They are by far your worst nightmare, and nearly indestructible. You are better off not even trying. Be prepared to be violently slaughtered. Your only chance is to have some backup…

The Lily guards its flowers jealously though: its root system grows rapidly underground into a large pitted knot full of fluid filled hollows – some large enough to hold a Stag. Many that try to take the flower instead find themselves as dinner.
