1. Introduction

This guide is still barely complete, but i’ll give the best to gather all the information you want to know about defense specced mercs and aggro management. Furthermore, this post will be a work-in-progress. This compendium will be continually updated as patches and hotfixes alter the class.
If you find any mistakes, besides grammar :P , have suggestions or questions feel free to let me know about.

2. Pros & Cons:

PROS:
Phat Tank
Highest possible HitPoints
Highest possible Defense
Core of every Party

CONS:

low damage
slow leveling

3. Basic Stats:
U gain 3 status points per landlevel and 1 per navallevel.
In addition u will gain for each landlevel 1 skillpoint. The maximum level of skills varies from 3-15.
All in all you will receive 40 skillpoints before changing to 2nd Class.
2nd Class of Choice: Guardian Swordsman

Strength: +0,66 dmg [phy+rng+skills]
Quickness: +1 Hit; +0,5 Avoid
Physical Strength: +40 HP; (HP gain increases slightly each point you spent)
Inteligence: +1 dmg [skills only]
Wisdom: +26 MP; (MP gain increases slightly each point you spent)
Volitition: +3 Crit

Defense: -0,5 dmg

In addition you will always regenerate 2% of your maximum Health/ Manapool while standing (except when in combat) and 10% while sitting. Thus not only PS and WIS will increase your regeneration but items with +max HP/ MP as well.

Didn’t tested this yet, but i will in CB3.

Recommended:

3 PS : 1 WIS (2 PS + 1 WIS each landlevel; 1 PS each navallevel)

This build relies on spamming skills. Due to the fact that the MP costs increase which each skill level we need a decent manapool. In addition skills got an extremely high hitrate (i think abaout 95-99% varies from skill to skill, but this is just a feeling). Thus we are independent from quickness and don’t have to put points in Zoom.

4. FAQ about Defense Mercs and Aggro management:

1.) Are there skills/ spells that create a lot of aggro or an increased amount even if they dont deal much damage?
Provoke is your best friend. It draws immediately the targets attention to the tank until the duration of provoke wears off.

2.) If so, are you able to tank against damage dealer with provoke alone, or do you need a good amount of damage yourself?
Provoke and your puny amount of damage will be enough.

3.) Am I able to tank multiple targets?
In early levels you will have a tough job tanking multiple targets, because your tiny damage output and the ability to only taunt 2 targets at the same time ( provoke last 15s while its cooldown is 8s ). With lvl 21 you get Stroke Land which does AoE damage.When becoming a Guardian Swordsman you will be able to AoE Taunt your enemys, which helps a lot.

4.) Are you able to block an attack with a shield or does it only improve your defense?
You are not able to block attacks with your shield. But it will greatly improve your defence. You are also able to use Shield Bash with a shield.

5.) Are there other attributes, besides defense and Phy Str/ HP, which will help a tank to survive?
There are. Avoidance will help to get hit less often. But at the moment you dont benefit much from raising quickness.
Resistences will help to reduce magic damage. I recommend to get two gears, one with a ton of defense and avoidance and another with a lot of resitences against magic. Both with as much phy str as possible.

Note: At the moment the description of skills is highly inaccurate, in terms of bonus damage and so on. The required lvl and maximum lvl of skills may change. Moreover the MP costs will increase with each point you spent.

5.1. Active Skills:

Quick Stroke

Type: Active
Required Lv.:1
Maximum Skill Lv.: 5
MP:15
Cool down: 4 seconds
Weapons: 1H Sword and 2H Sword
Description: Attack target quickly
Lv 1: increase dmg of next attack by 14
Lv 2: increase dmg of next attack by 21
Lv 3: increase dmg of next attack by 26
Lv 4: increase dmg of next attack by 33
Lv 5: increase dmg of next attack by 42
(Just a prerequ, spent only one point)

Warrior’s Shout

Type: Active
Required Lv.:1
Maximum Skill Lv: 5
MP:25
Cool down: 5 seconds
Description: Increase combat efficiency for 1 minute.
Lv 1: increase attack by 5% and attack speed by 0.15seconds
Lv 2: increase attack by 7% and attack speed by 0.15seconds
Lv 3: increase attack by 10% and attack speed by 0.15seconds
Lv 4: increase attack by 13% and attack speed by 0.15seconds
Lv 5: increase attack by 16% and attack speed by 0.15seconds
(handy skill, because you are able to use your skills more frequently. Spent one point)

Striking up

Type: Active
Required Lv.: 4
Maximum Skill Lv.: 10
MP:40
Cool down: 20 seconds
Description: Attack the target while jumping up. Can throw back the target.
Lv 1: knockbacks the target and deals 38 dmg
Lv 2: knockbacks the target and deals 49 dmg
Lv 3: knockbacks the target and deals 64 dmg
Lv 4: knockbacks the target and deals 78 dmg
Lv 5: knockbacks the target and deals 94 dmg
Lv 6: knockbacks the target and deals 108 dmg
Lv 7: knockbacks the target and deals 124 dmg
Lv 8: knockbacks the target and deals 140 dmg
Lv 9: knockbacks the target and deals 157 dmg
Lv 10: knockbacks the target and deals 176 dmg
(your 2nd stun. Again one point is enough)

Contionous Cutting

Type: Active
Required Lv.:4

Cool down: 5 seconds
Weapons: Long Sword and Dagger
Description: Attack target twice.
Lv 1: attacks target 2 times with 47bonus dmg
Lv 2: attacks target 2 times with 62bonus dmg
Lv 3: attacks target 2 times with 78bonus dmg
Lv 4: attacks target 2 times with 94bonus dmg
Lv 5: attacks target 2 times with 109bonus dmg
Lv 6: attacks target 2 times with 125bonus dmg
Lv 7: attacks target 2 times with 140bonus dmg
Lv 8: attacks target 2 times with 156bonus dmg
Lv 9: attacks target 2 times with 172bonus dmg
Lv 10: attacks target 2 times with 189bonus dmg
(your 2nd attack skill, one point is enough)

Provocation

Type: Active
Required Lv.:7

Cool down: 8 seconds
Description: Provoke the target, increases target’s attack power but decreases its defence. The target will start attacking you.
Lv 1: 15 seconds duration, reduces target defense by 10, increase target attack speed
Lv 2: 15 seconds duration, reduces target defense by 26, increase target attack speed
Lv 3: 15 seconds duration, reduces target defense by 36, increase target attack speed
Lv 4: 15 seconds duration, reduces target defense by 50, increase target attack speed
(This is your bread and butter, you can’t tank without. Forces the target to attack you and incraeses the dmg you and your party will deal)

Shield Bash

Type: Active
Required Lv.: 10
Maximum Skill Lv.: 4
MP:40
Cool down: 15 seconds
Weapons: Shield
Description: Hit the target with your shield, deals damage and stuns it
Lv 1: stuns for 3 seconds, reduces targets defense by 12
Lv 2: stuns for 4 seconds, reduces targets defense by 20
Lv 3: stuns for 5 seconds, reduces targets defense by 24
Lv 4: stuns for 6 seconds, reduces targets defense by 28
(deals a nice amount of damage, plus reduces defense for extra dmg – don’t miss it)

Stroke land

Required Lv.:21
MP:45
Cool down: 30 seconds
Weapons: Long Sword
Description: Attack the target and cause reduction in attack speed and movement speed on target.
Lv 1: deals 140 dmg and reduces attack- and movement speed
Lv 2: deals 166 dmg and reduces attack- and movement speed
Lv 3: deals 194 dmg and reduces attack- and movement speed
Lv 4: deals 226 dmg and reduces attack- and movement speed
Lv 5: deals 270 dmg and reduces attack- and movement speed
Lv 6: deals 309 dmg and reduces attack- and movement speed
Lv 7: deals 351 dmg and reduces attack- and movement speed
(finally you get an AoE which will help to tank multiple targets :3 )

Storm Blade

Type: Active
Required Lv.: 25
Maximum Skill Lv.: 6
MP:57
Cool down: 15 seconds
Weapons: Long Sword
Description: Continuously attack the target.
Lv 1: Multiple hits with 161 bonus dmg
Lv 2: Multiple hits with 187 bonus dmg
Lv 3: Multiple hits with 221 bonus dmg
Lv 4: Multiple hits with 254 bonus dmg
Lv 5: Multiple hits with 290 bonus dmg
Lv 6: Multiple hits with 326 bonus dmg
(At this point your new UBER dmg skill, one point’s enough :P )

5.2. Passive Skills:

Stone Skin

Type: Passive
Required Lv.: 9
Maximum Skill Lv.: 6
Description: Increase physical defense.
Lv 1: increase your defense by 4
Lv 2: increase your defense by 6
Lv 3: increase your defense by 9
Lv 4: increase your defense by 12
Lv 5: increase your defense by 16
Lv 6: increase your defense by 20
(must have)

Shield Tactics

Type: Passive
Required Lv.: 13
Maximum Skill Lv.: 5
Description: When a shield is equiped, increases your physical defence.
Lv 1: when equipped with a shield your defense increases by 6
Lv 2: when equipped with a shield your defense increases by 10
Lv 3: when equipped with a shield your defense increases by 14
Lv 4: when equipped with a shield your defense increases by 20
Lv 5: when equipped with a shield your defense increases by 26
(no brainer)

 
Heart of Iron

Type: Passive
Required Lv.: 13
Maximum Skill Lv.: 5
Description: Increases maximum HP.
Lv 1: increases your maximum HP by 100
Lv 2: increases your HP by 140
Lv 3: increases your HP by 185
Lv 4: increases your HP by 230
Lv 5: increases your HP by 280
(also a no brainer here)


Sword Mastery

Type: Passive
Required Lv.: 14
Maximum Skill Lv.: 5
Weapons: All
Description: When 1-handed sword is equiped, increases attack power.
Lv 1: increases your attack by 6 when you are equipped with a 1H sword
Lv 2: increases your attack by 8 when you are equipped with a 1H sword
Lv 3: increases your attack by 10 when you are equipped with a 1H sword
Lv 4: increases your attack by 12 when you are equipped with a 1H sword
Lv 5: increases your attack by 15 when you are equipped with a 1H sword
(You will always wear a 1-handed sword – improves your aggroproduction and will make soloing less of a pain in the ass)

Zoom

Type: Passive
Required Lv.: 16
Maximum Skill Lv.: 3
Description: Increases accuracy
Lv 1: increases your Hitrate by 5
Lv 1: increases your Hitrate by 8
Lv 1: increases your Hitrate by 12
(we dont need Hitrate because we spam skills)

At this point i would recommend this build for defense Mercenary who want highest possible mitigation:
